Dr. K. P. Haridas has been an exemplary torch bearer of the medical profession for the last 50 years. His achievements are many so also his unmatched commitment and dedication to bettering people's lives that differentiates him from other high achievers. He has worked tirelessly for the last 50 years in the surgical field without taking a break.
After receiving his medical degree for Medical College Thiruvananthapuram in 1967, Dr. Haridas started his career in 1968 as a lecturer in Pharmacology and later moved on to join his favourite discipline of Surgery in 1970 at Medical College Hospital, Calicut. His professional acumen and skills are widely accepted because of his work experience in prestigious hospitals in the UK for six years and earned his Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons FRCS (Glasgow). Dr. Haridas returned back to Kerala to re-join government services at the Medical College Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala as Assistant Professor in Surgery in 1980 and successfully conducted the first extensive Liver resection in Kerala in 1984, which was too difficult to operate on without the use of highly advanced medical technology that exists today. In 1987 he moved to UAE and took up the position of a consultant surgeon and Chief of Surgical division at Beda Zayed Hospital in Abu Dhabi. After five years, he rejoined his services in Medical College Thiruvananthapuram and served as Associate Professor in Surgery in 1992 till 1994. By 1995, he moved back to Calicut Medical College and was the Professor and Head of the Department in Surgery until he resigned from Government services in 1997
One aspect of this highly skilled surgeon's mindset that sets him apart is his focus on innovation. Even during the early days of his career, he was not afraid to push the boundaries and attempt surgeries that other doctors had deemed too difficult.
In 2000, he started, now one of the most reputed hospitals in the city of Trivandrum, the Lords Hospital, after a decade of careful planning. Under his astute leadership, the hospital has become a centre of excellence in the fields of minimally invasive surgeries, metabolic and bariatrics surgeries, liver resection, single incision surgery, video assisted anal fistula treatment and RFA for varicose veins, etc.
One can sense that flame of fire that burns within him for his profession and dedication towards society as he has performed tens of thousands of surgeries in the last five decades and still works relentlessly every day of the week. He is a philanthropist, supporting initiatives in Kerala to educate young people and finance poor homes and charitable institutions like Gandhi Bhavan, Pathanapuram, differently abled children in the Rotary institute, Trivandrum etc.
Looking to the future, Dr. Haridas wishes to keep contributing to the community through the works of “Usha and Haridas Charitable Society” and to build a geriatric home and an orphanage. A matter of certainty is that his philosophy on life has been and will continue to be an inspiration for young doctors in particular, and people at large. Recognizing his contribution to the field of medicine and surgery, the Government of India in 2015, honoured him with the prestigious PADMA SHRI award. He is currently in the process of revising and publishing his memoir titled “Story of My Scalpel” which he believes will inspire thousands of budding surgeons to make the pursuit of innovation and excellence an integral aspect of their lives. He is also in the process of authoring textbooks which would be an unparallel guide for surgical procedures for future surgeons.
